By winning the self you can win all
Mind is fickle and as powerful as a horse. To control it is not easy; it is not a child’s play.
To control the horse – to rein him requires lots of effort; many times more efforts are expected to be exercised to control the mind.
As reins and whip are necessary to control the horse, restraint and penance are necessary to control the mind.
Perverted mind runs after objects of senses. Self-conquest could be made easy by restraining the mind and directing that to meditation.
For self-progress it is essential to conquer the self. One who cannot win himself, he cannot win over others. Therefore, we should agree that true conquest is self-conquest only.

वर्धमान महावीर के शिष्यों में चर्चा में चल रही थी कि मनुष्य के अधःपतन का क्या कारण है?
किसी ने कामवासना बताया तो किसी ने लोभ, तो किसी ने अहंकार। आखिर वे शंका-समाधान करने के लिए महावीर के पास आए।
महावीर ने शिष्यों से पूछा- “पहले यह बताओ कि मेरे पास एक अच्छा बढ़िया कमण्डलु है जिसमें पर्याप्त मात्रा में जल समा सकता है। यदि उसे नदी में छोड़ा जाए, तो क्या वह डूबेगा?”
शिष्यों ने एक स्वर से जवाब दिया- “कदापि नहीं।“
महावीर ने पूछा- “और यदि उसमें एक छिद्र हो जावे तो?”
शिष्य- “तब तो डूबेगा ही।“
महावीर- “यदि दायीं ओर हो तो?”
शिष्य- “दायीं ओर हो या बायीं ओर! छिद्र कहीं भी हो, पानी उसमें प्रवेश करेगा ही और वह डूब जाएगा।“
महावीर बोले- “तो बस जान लो कि मानव जीवन भी उस कमंडलु के समान ही है। काम, क्रोध, लोभ, मोह, अहंकार, मत्सर आदि सभी दुर्गुण उसे डुबाने के निमित्त कारण हो सकते हैं। किसी में कोई भेदभाव नहीं, प्रत्येक अपना-अपना असर करता है। इसलिए हमें सजग रहना चाहिए कि कहीं हमारे जीवन रूपी कमंडलु में कोई छिद्र तो नहीं हो रहा है।“
