Speak not harshly

नो वयणं फरूसं वइज्जा

Speech is of two kinds – harsh and mild. In angry and cruel mood, it is crude; and mild when one is humble and quiet. Speech of kindness, compassion, sympathy, love, relations, affection, and deceit is mild. Against this, speech of cruelty, aversion, anger, haughtiness is discordant. सव्वेसिं जीवियं पियं, नाइवाएज्ज कंचणं

All love life, no one wants to die

Who is the one, who does not want to live? Everyone loves his own life. How valuable is human life is known when he is asked to choose in between the two choices – at one place his death is kept along with millions of gold coins and on the other side his life is kept along with little money. Do not lick the spitted

से मइमं परिय मा य हु लालं पच्चासी

Wise aspirant should not lick the spitted i.e. not desire those which have been renounced

When with open eyes an aspirant sees that in this world after sense gratification people become sick, call on the doctors and pay their hefty bills and still are not able to get rid of diseases completely; one after another disease strikes them, then they get a little mentally disgruntled. If in this position, he is fortunate to listen to the saints who have renounced the world, then he may also forsake the sensuous objects and accept the life of an ascetic. Value the time

अणभिक्कंतं च वयं संपेहाए,
खणं जाणाहि पंडिए

Wise man! Seeing the remaining age, realize the importance of time – understand the value of opportunity

पावकम्मं नेव कुज्जा न कारवेज्जा

Sins should neither be committed by self, nor should be done through others

Result of virtue is happiness and result of vice is pain. Everyone wants happiness, then also they are lazy in doing virtuous acts; no body wants pain; yet carefully, they use the medium of pain or take pleasure in sins. How strange is this?
