Restraining the desires

छंदं निरोहेण उवेइ मोक्खं

Moksha (liberation) is possible through restraining of desires

Desires are infinite. Fulfill one and another is born. After that the third and after the third the fourth is born; after the fourth is born the fifth and so these desires are generated one after another. चत्तारि समणोवासगा-अद्दागसमाणे,
पडागसमाणे, ठाणुसमाणे, खरकंटगसमाणे

Devotees are of four kinds: like a mirror (of pure heart), like a flag (with a fickle mind), like a stump (perverted) and like a thorn (abusive)

Age is depleting

सेणे जह वट्टयं हरे, एवं आउखयंमि तुट्टइ

As the hawk kills the quail in one stroke, so also after completion of age, death takes away life

The entire world is the food of death. A little is in its mouth, a little in its lap and a little in its palms. One day his death is imminent whose age is remaining, still not completed, though he may live. Those who are born in this world surely die, some before and some after – this is the only difference.
